I have experience in non-profit theater management (executive director of Chicago's Organic Theater, 1981-84), public administration (deputy commissioner of cultural affairs, Chicago 1984 - 91), arts philanthropy (MacArthur Foundation 1991-2001), arts policy (Center for Arts Policy, Columbia College Chicago, 2001-08). Much of my work over the last twenty years has focused on the role of the arts in communities and in education. I wrote Putting the Arts in the Picture: Reframing Education in the 21st Century (2005), and I am working now on the first national research project on teaching artists.
