
Chi-wang Yang is a Los Angeles-based theater director. Committed to physical performance and cross-disciplinary experimentation, his work combines notions of stage, media, and body. He is a founding member of video performance collective Cloud Eye Control, whose technology infused productions integrate live theater, animation, and music. His work has been presented at REDCAT, Fusebox Festival, EXIT Festival (France), Time-Based Arts Festival, the Platform International Animation Festival, and the San Francisco International Film Festival, and Edinburgh International Festival Fringe.
Recent projects include Under Polaris with Cloud Eye Control, featuring influential alt rock band THE NEED. Last year he directed the world-premier of The Closest Farthest Away/Entrañable Lejanía, which was presentedin Cuba at the Havana International Film Festival. This groundbreaking international collaboration was conceived of as a hybrid of theater and cinema and created by American and Cuban artists.
Chi-wang received his MFA in Theater Directing and Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts where he studied under Travis Preston. During that time, he was awarded the Princess Grace George C. Wolfe Theater Award for Directing. Other training includes the SITI Company with Anne Bogart, the Kitchen Summer Institute, and Brown University (BA). Presently Chi-wang teaches at CalArts.
